How Can We Help?

How to update your shopify theme?

We often release new version of our themes which includes either bug fix, new features, improve performance or new demos.

Important Note: If you have installed any app that required changes to the code in theme files or If there are any customization work, you will need to do it again to the new theme version. Theme upgrade will not migrate custom code from old version to new version itself.

Updating shopify theme is manual process and standard for all Shopify themes. This is how the Shopify theme updates work and not something specific to our themes.

Step 1 : First download latest package from themeforest and unzip main file. Themeforest Download always have latest theme version.

Step 2 : Before you update theme, we always recommend you to create a backup of your current published/working theme.

To do this, Go to Online Store > Themes > Click Actions > Duplicate. Once the theme has been duplicated, you will see the copy in the list of unpublished themes. You can give it name like “Theme – backup“.

Step 3 : Now click on “Upload theme” button and install a fresh copy of theme demo. (You already have latest theme demo zip file as you downloaded in step 1 – Upload “avone-install-me” zip file).

This will be installed as an ‘unpublished’ theme. You should see the latest installed theme in the list of unpublished themes. You can give it name like “Theme – Latest“. This will not affect your live store. Do not publish yet. You can publish this new version when it is ready to go live.

Step 4 : : Copy theme settings from your current active theme ( published theme).

From the active theme > Click on Action > Edit Code > Config (folder name) > open the settings_data.json file – Copy all code from the file.
(Use Command-A (Mac) or Control-A (Win) to select all and then Command-C (Mac) or Control-C (Win) to copy all the selected code)

The following link will take you to your active theme settings_data.json file in the Code Editor
https://shopify.com/admin/themes/current?key=config/settings_data.json

Step 5 : : Paste your current theme settings to the new theme.

Open the same file settings_data.json in new theme version ( theme you installed in step 3). Delete all code within the file and paste new code ( code you copied in step 4). Click on save.

Step 6 : Check preview of new theme version. Make sure everything is working fine. Now you can publish your new theme.

If you have any apps installed that add extra code to the theme, You need to check their documentation and most likely you will need to reinstall them to setup with the new theme version.

We recommend you not to delete the old theme version and keep bakup of last few version. So you can use old version if something go wrong with current one.
